What Is American Diamond? The Straight Answer
American Diamond is cubic zirconia — a lab-made stone, cut and polished to look the way a diamond looks, at a fraction of the cost. It is not a diamond, and we have never once sold it as one. If you searched for a straight answer, that is it.
Where the name actually comes from
"American Diamond", "AD", "CZ" and "zirconia" all refer to the same material. None of it comes from America, and none of it comes from a diamond mine anywhere. The name is a trade term that took hold in the Indian jewellery market years ago, describing how the stone looks rather than where it came from. Once that is clear, most of the confusion around the term goes away.
What the stone actually is
Cubic zirconia is grown as a crystal in a lab, not dug out of the ground. It is then cut and faceted much the way a diamond cutter works a rough diamond, similar angles, the same aim of throwing light back. That is why it photographs so well, and why across a room most people cannot tell the difference. Up close, under a loupe, a trained eye can.
What 5A+ actually tells you
Most of our American Diamond is set at 5A+, which is a grading scale for cut and clarity, not a chemistry spec. Two stones cut from the same material can still throw back light differently, one bright and even, the other duller, the facets a shade off. 5A+ sits at the top of that scale. It is why two AD studs that look identical in a photograph can behave differently once they catch real daylight, and it is a fair question to ask anywhere you are comparing pieces, ours included.
What it is not good at
Here is the limitation, and it matters most on a ring. American Diamond is harder to scratch than glass, but nowhere near as hard as a diamond, and over time it shows. A ring worn daily, knocking against door handles and gripping shopping bags, picks up fine surface marks after a few years that a diamond simply would not. Earrings and pendants do not take that kind of impact, so they keep their shine far longer. If you want a stone that still looks new after a decade of hard daily wear on a ring, American Diamond is not the honest answer. A diamond is, at a diamond's price. Anyone telling you the two age the same way is not being straight with you.
Where it genuinely earns its place
Put two stones side by side in a pair of studs and colour matching becomes the whole game. In a natural stone, matching two pieces exactly in colour and cut is difficult and expensive, since mined stones vary even from the same source. American Diamond is manufactured to a specification, so a matched pair comes out matched every time, without either stone pushing up the price. That is not a consolation prize. It is the real reason AD suits studs and pendants so well.
The metal underneath it
Whatever stone sits on top, ours is always set in genuine 925 sterling silver, stamped accordingly. Studs and rings sit against skin for hours without a break, exactly the kind of contact the Sheffield Assay Office (UK) tests for: not just purity, but what the metal releases onto skin under prolonged wear. Ours comes back nickel-free, cadmium-free and lead-free.
Browse the full American Diamond earrings range, or go straight to American Diamond rings if you already know the stone you want. Our stud collection is where the matched-pair case above shows up most, in pieces built for daily wear rather than one occasion. For how the metal itself is priced and made, pure silver vs 925 sterling silver is worth five minutes, and what decides the price of silver jewellery in India covers where the stone fits into that bigger picture.
