Silver Pendants and Lockets: Picking One That Gets Worn

A pendant that photographs beautifully on a stand can still sit in a drawer for six months. Being pretty isn't the test. Earning a place on a chain every day is. Locket and pendant get used online as if they mean the same thing. Sorting that out first saves a wrong purchase.

A locket opens. A pendant doesn't.

A locket has a hinge and a small cavity. It opens, and something goes inside, usually a photo. A pendant is solid. It hangs, it catches light, and that's the whole job. Searches for "locket for girls" often turn up plain pendants, and searches for "pendant" turn up lockets, because sellers use the words loosely. If the piece needs to hold a picture, check that it actually opens before you buy it. If you just want something on a chain, ask for a pendant, not a locket.

Match the motif to the person, not the trend

We make pendants across eight broad families: heart, star, floral, celestial, evil eye, initial, animal (mostly elephant) and birthstone. Some are safe to buy for someone else. A heart or a floral piece rarely goes wrong. An initial pendant is nearly as safe. Elephant pendants are more distinctive, better for someone whose taste you already know than a first gift. A birthstone pendant reads as thoughtful because it's tied to a month, not a guess. Our birthstone jewellery collection covers all twelve, and the birthstones by month guide has the rest of the detail. An evil eye pendant is more particular. Skip it as a gift unless you already know the person wears one. A heart is the safer default.

When a locket earns its keep

Buy a locket when there's an actual photo going in it. A parent, a child, a couple. That's what makes it a locket rather than a pendant with extra steps. Without a photo, an empty locket reads as unfinished, not sentimental, so buy a plain pendant instead.

Chain length decides where it sits

The same pendant looks different at 16 inches than at 22. Shorter sits at the collarbone and shows above most necklines. Longer drops past the sternum and disappears under a kurta or a crew neck. Our chain length guide covers the sizing properly. Short version: go shorter if the pendant is the point, longer if you want it quieter.

Weight versus chain gauge

A heavy pendant on a fine chain does one thing over months of wear: it pulls on the bail, the small loop joining pendant to chain, and stretches that loop faster than the rest of the chain ages. If you've picked something substantial, a larger star or dense floral design, pair it with a slightly heavier chain, not the thinnest one in the range. Delicate chains suit delicate pendants. Our pearl pendant styles sit lighter than most and wear well on a fine chain for exactly that reason.

Silver, nickel, and everyday wear

A pendant sits against skin for hours at a stretch, so what it's made of matters more than it looks like it should. Ours is genuine 925 silver, tested by the Sheffield Assay Office (UK) for nickel, cadmium and lead against some of the strictest limits in use. Nickel-free, cadmium-free, lead-free, worth knowing if jewellery has ever irritated your skin before. Browse the full pendants collection to see the range across all eight motifs.
