Silver Hoop Earring Size Guide: 10mm to 50mm Explained
Share
Hoop earrings are sized in millimetres — but that number confuses almost everyone the first time. If you have ever wondered how big a 12mm earring actually is, this guide answers it in plain terms.
How hoop earrings are measured
A hoop's size is its outer diameter — the width straight across the circle, not the distance around it. So a 20mm hoop measures 2 centimetres across. Hold a ruler up and look at the 20mm mark: that is genuinely the whole hoop, which is why hoops often look smaller in a photo than the number suggests.
The second number that matters is thickness — how chunky the metal itself is. Our hoops come in 1.2mm (fine and lightweight) and 2.0mm (a bolder, more solid look). Two hoops of the same diameter can look completely different depending on thickness.
What each size actually looks like
- 10mm – 12mm (huggie): sits close against the lobe, barely moving. The most understated option, and the easiest to wear every day or in a second piercing.
- 15mm – 20mm (small): reads clearly as a hoop but stays neat. This is the everyday sweet spot for most people.
- 25mm – 30mm (medium): drops just below the earlobe and starts to catch movement. Noticeable without being loud.
- 40mm – 50mm (statement): a deliberate focal point. Best when the rest of your jewellery stays simple.
Choosing your size
If you are buying your first pair, 15mm–20mm is the safest choice — small enough for work and daily wear, big enough to actually look like a hoop. If you already own a small pair and want contrast, jump to 30mm rather than 25mm; a 5mm difference is hard to notice once they are on.
For a stacked or multi-piercing look, mix diameters rather than repeating one size — a 10mm huggie in the upper piercing with a 20mm hoop in the lobe reads far better than two similar hoops.
Men's styling tends to sit at the smaller end: most people choose 10mm–20mm for a single hoop. You can see that range in our men's hoop earrings.
Why the metal matters
Every hoop we make is 925 sterling silver — the international standard for real silver jewellery. Ours also carry R-Coat™, our protective anti-tarnish finish, so they keep their brightness through daily wear far longer than untreated silver.
Keeping them bright
Store hoops in a dry pouch rather than loose in a bowl, keep them away from perfume and hairspray by putting jewellery on last, and wipe them with a soft dry cloth after wearing. That routine alone keeps a pair looking new for years.
