Men's Silver Stud Earrings: How to Wear the Single-Stud Look

The single stud has quietly become the most worn men's earring — understated, easy to pull off, and it works with almost anything. Here is how to choose one properly.

Start with size

Stud size is the width of the visible front, in millimetres, and it changes the look completely:

  • 3mm – 4mm: deliberately subtle. Reads as a detail rather than a statement — the safest choice for the office or a first earring.
  • 5mm: the most popular middle ground. Clearly visible, still restrained.
  • 6mm and above: a genuine focal point. Best worn alone, with nothing competing.

If you are unsure, 5mm is the size most people settle on.

One stud or two?

Both are correct — there is no rule left worth following here. A single stud reads slightly more deliberate and is the more common choice; a matched pair reads more symmetrical and formal. If you are wearing one, most people pick the side that faces away in their usual profile, but it is entirely personal.

Choosing the stone

Plain silver ball studs are the most versatile and disappear into any outfit. For something with more presence, a solitaire set with American Diamond gives the bright, faceted sparkle of a diamond at a fraction of the cost — it is a premium simulant, never sold as a real diamond. Round and square (princess-cut style) settings are both popular; square tends to read slightly sharper and more modern.

If you prefer a warmer tone, Gold-Plated options over 925 sterling silver give the gold look while keeping a genuine silver base.

The back matters more than you think

A push-back is fast to put on and fine for occasional wear. A screw-back threads on securely and is much harder to lose — worth choosing for a stud you intend to leave in day to day, including at the gym or overnight.

Why 925 sterling silver

All our men's studs are 925 sterling silver — the international standard for real silver — and nickel-free. They also carry R-Coat™, our protective anti-tarnish finish, which keeps them bright through daily wear rather than dulling after a few weeks.

Keeping them sharp

Put earrings on last, after aftershave or styling products. Wipe with a soft dry cloth after wearing, and store them dry. That is genuinely all it takes.
