Choosing Jewellery for a New Nose or Ear Piercing

Getting a new piercing raises two separate questions: the piercing itself, and what you actually wear in it. This guide covers the second — how to choose jewellery you will be comfortable in.

One thing to be clear about up front: piercing itself is a professional service, and aftercare advice should come from the studio that pierced you. Healing times, when it is safe to change your jewellery, and how to clean a fresh piercing are all questions for your piercer — not something to take from a jewellery guide. Costs vary widely by city and studio, so ask locally.

Why the metal matters most

For anything sitting in your skin all day, material is the single most important factor. All our pieces are 925 sterling silver — the recognised standard for real silver — and nickel-free, which matters because nickel is the most common irritant in cheap fashion jewellery.

Our pieces also carry R-Coat™, a protective anti-tarnish finish that keeps silver bright through daily wear — useful for a piece you plan to leave in rather than swap constantly.

Nose jewellery: the three main styles

  • Nose pin (stud): the most discreet option — a small decorative front with a straight or L-shaped post. The easiest style for everyday and for work environments.
  • Nose ring / nath: a hoop that sits through the piercing. More visible and more traditional; sizes vary, so check the diameter the way you would a hoop earring.
  • Clip-on (no piercing): gives the look without a piercing at all — genuinely useful if you want to try the style first, or for occasions only.

You can compare all three in our silver nose rings and nose pins collection.

Ear jewellery: start simple

For a new lobe piercing, a plain stud is the practical starting point — it sits flat, does not catch on clothing or hair, and is easy to keep clean. Small solitaire studs in American Diamond (our term for the premium stone we use, never a real diamond) are a popular first choice because they suit everything.

Two fittings are worth knowing: push-back studs are quick to put on, while screw-back studs thread on and are far harder to lose — the better choice for something you plan to wear constantly. Browse both in silver stud earrings.

Sizing without guesswork

For studs, the number quoted is the width of the decorative front — 3mm is subtle, 5mm–6mm is clearly visible. For hoops and nose rings, it is the outer diameter, so a smaller number sits tighter to the skin.

Simple care

Put jewellery on after perfume and hairspray, not before. Store pieces dry and separate rather than loose together. A soft dry cloth after wearing is enough to keep silver bright.
